Golden Birthday Boy

My Matty,

You turned five years old today! I am so proud of the little boy you've become - you melt my heart on a daily, if not hourly, basis. Four was a good age/good year for you. Your daddy and I have both enjoyed it so much. You are independent, yet you still call me to wipe your bottom. You are super smart, yet you still look to me for help writing your letters. You are sneaky and can hold your own with your siblings, yet you still ninja into my bed at night because you are scared. You are ALL BOY, but you still give me great hugs and sweet kisses.

Here some observations of you as you turn five years old:
  • Your best friends are Lucas Park, Blake Heeter, Lukas Hamilton. You still have a little love interest in Mia Stoklas.
  • Your favorite color (as of today) is silver. It was green while you were four.
  • Your favorite foods are spaghetti (yes, you call it spaghetti now instead of pasghetti, sigh) and oranges. You can eat 6-8 clementines in one sitting.
  • Your favorite TV show is anything baseball. I will write more about your obsession with baseball below.
  • When you grow up you want to be a baseball player.
  • You love to play imaginary sports in the house. Your mind amazes me. Over the past year, I've watched you develop a love of football, baseball, and basketball. It has been a true joy watching you run all over the house and make up games as you go. You use random toys as bases in baseball, old maid cards as the free-throw line in basketball, and our leather chair as the end zone in football.
  • Your hair is light brown. Your eyes are a gray-blue. You are still stocky - not chunky at all - but solid. Your hands feel like sandpaper from your dry skin/eczema. Your finger/toe nails grow faster than any nails I've seen. Even though Taylor is 2 1/4 years older than you, you now weigh the same, if not more, than her.
  • You are my great compromiser. You are stuck between two strong personalities: Taylor, who can be "Miss Priss", and Brayden, who is three and still throws tantrums. I cannot tell you how many times you have helped me in a stressful situation. I love your easygoing attitude and am so grateful when you are willing to be flexible (like this morning when Brayden freaked out that you had the blue bowl of Cheerios - you gladly game him your half-eaten bowl of Cheerios in exchange for his green bowl).
  • Your math knowledge is incredible. Truly incredible. The other day, you added up the numbers on the bar code of a candy wrapper that totaled 56. There were probably 7-8 numbers on the bar code, and you quickly added them together. You know that 9x9=81 and you know that if you go to bed at 8:00 PM and sleep for 10 hours that you will sleep until 6:00 AM.
  • You are obsessed with baseball. It is incredible and disturbing at the same time. Your little world revolves around baseball. Your daddy is in hog heaven now that you two can watch games together. You know more about the sport than I do. You can watch nine-inning of baseball in one sitting and love discussing it with daddy. We had such a special time with you last weekend at the Mariners' games. You told me the other day that you want to try and start batting lefty during t-ball practice so that you can be a switch hitter.
  • You and I love to sing songs together. Our current favorites include "Locked Away" by R. City and Adam Levine, "One Call Away" by Charlie Puth, and "Love Yourself" by Justin Beiber.
  • Aside from playing sports, you love to play Uno. You could play for hours and hours. This game has been a fan favorite with Grandma and Pop Pop. You three play almost every time you are together. Taylor joins in too if she is home from school. You love the game, but boy can you be a sore loser if someone beats you!
  • Your outfit of choice is work out shorts (not sure what else to call them, but sport shorts, not dressy shorts) and a t-shirt with some sort of sports team on it. Most mornings, you come downstairs already dressed. I no longer have any say in what you wear.
Matty, I pray that God continues to develop the amazing qualities you exhibit as a five-year old: you are intelligent, focused, competitive, sensitive, loving, giving, and sweet. All of these wonderful characteristics are wrapped up in one little soul, and I would not want you any other way. I love you, sweet Matty-boy, and I am so darn lucky to be your mommy!

Happy 5th Birthday!
XOXO,
Mommy
